Milking the Cows: A Daily Ritual, A Life Lesson

Milking the Cows: A Daily Ritual, A Life Lesson

Good Morning, Friends,

I've been pondering a section from Mark Batterson's Win the Day where he talks about his father-in-law's morning ritual of working out, prayer, and crossword puzzles. It reminded me of my own formative years on our family dairy farm.

While we often hear about "eating the frog," a metaphor for tackling the most difficult task first, I prefer the simpler, more grounded image of "milking the cows."

This daily ritual, a non-negotiable for any farmer, has profound implications for our own lives.

I spent the summers of my formative childhood years on our family's dairy farm. For my family, milking the cows wasn't just a chore but a commitment. We rose before dawn to head to the milking parlor. The rhythmic clinking of chains and the lowing of cows filled the quiet morning.

This daily ritual taught me the value of discipline and consistency and the importance of tending to our responsibilities. This lesson extends far beyond the farm.

Whether it's a daily workout, a quiet moment of meditation, or a specific work task, we all have our own "cows to milk." These non-negotiable tasks, when prioritized, can significantly improve our productivity and overall well-being.

So, let's embrace our daily rituals, big or small. Let's commit to our non-negotiables and reap the rewards of a more focused, productive, and fulfilling life.

Remember my friends, every day, milk your cows.

Thanks for sharing. For those of us in the city the metaphor could be the gym. For those who don’t do exercise as such it could be simply how we frame our daily lives. - it’s what it takes to maintain your own individual wellbeing.
