Mildura office back on court after flooding events of 2022-23

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians.
Murray –Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) team members from the Mildura office rallied to support the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club. On any normal day, you could find yourself easily lost in the beauty of the Club. The immaculate grass courts are located on the banks of the Murray River, making it a one in a million location.
Play was stopped in November 2022 when devastating floods swept up the banks of the Murray. At the time the club was bustling as players battled it out for the singles championship when it started to rain. Matches stopped as the river started to rise out of the storm water drains. The club house and the courts were soon completely covered in flood water. Everyone knew in that moment; tennis was done for the season.
Eight weeks later as the water started to recede from the club, a reopening date slipped further and further away. Large amounts of silt and debris covered the courts. The club got to work restoring the courts back to their glory. With the help of a grant from the Victoria State Government and donations from Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria, the courts slowly came back to life.
Ten months after the flooding first began, the club reopened its doors. MDBA team members from Mildura saw first-hand the impact of flood waters on the town, so they jumped at the opportunity to get into the community and support the club.
Our Mildura office is one of 7 offices located across the Basin and we currently have 28 staff calling Mildura home. The office enables the organisation to develop and maintain strong regional links with communities.

Our team members participated in the corporate competition, hosted twice a year for a 6-week season over February and March. Every Thursday night the team duke it out (although it’s very social) with other businesses in Sunraysia. Some nights were very hot with no refuge until the sun dips down to bring desired relief, but there was always the smell of the BBQ to encourage participates to push through for a sausage sandwich afterwards.
Our players said it’s great to be in the community and see so many people coming to support the tennis club after a hard 10 months being closed. And what better place to play tennis than on the banks of the Murray River.
The club recently hosted the Tennis Australia Mildura International Pro Tour. What a way to say, “we’re back”.
