Migros To Focus on Lower Prices, Private-Label Brands

Swiss retail giant Migros has said that it plans to focus on lower prices, a more convenient store network, a broader range of private label products, and improving the efficiency of its workforce, as part of a company repositioning.

This strategic shift will enable the retailer to compete more directly with discounters Aldi and Lidl.

In an interview for Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung, CEO Mario Irminger explained that the expansion of the group's private-label range represents a "clear break" with the strategy implemented so far.

While popular name brands will remain, Migros will strategically eliminate less popular brands in order to to optimise shelf space and potentially reduce costs. The identity of specific brands that are set to be removed hasn't been announced yet.

Six in ten Spanish shoppers (60%) say that they are purchasing more private-label products in a bid to save money, a new study by retailer Dia has found.

In addition, half of respondents to the 'Tu Bolsillo al Dia' study said that the saving achieved from shopping for private labels is between 10% and 25% of their monthly shopping bill.

The annual study found that Spanish shoppers this year are chiefly concerned with saving money where possible, which has led to an increase in the number of consumers comparing prices, seeking out promotions, and planning weekly spend in advance.

At the same time, the study also found that shoppers are putting increased focus on the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with a third of respondents saying they would be willing to pay more for better quality, healthier items.

In terms of weekly spend, 45% of respondents said that they spend between €50 and €100 per week on shopping, while 42% spend between €25 and €50

More than 20,000 Tesco employees will share a windfall profit of more than £30 million (€35.4 million) from maturing stock schemes, Britain's biggest supermarket group has said.

The retailer said the employees, who mostly work in stores and distribution centres, have benefited from strong growth in Tesco's share price, which has risen by 23% over the past year.

Economic think tanks have historically described Britain as a laggard in the area of minimum employee benefits. But a tight labour market after Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted companies to raise their game.

Tesco, which is also Britain's largest private sector employer, increased store workers' pay by 9.1% in March.

The company said that workers who joined its share savings schemes are able to buy shares at a discounted price of £1.88 or £1.98 each and either keep them for the longer term or sell them.
