Migration and Population Density Dashboard - WorldBank Data

When I first started learning about the population of countries and the world, there were three billion of us. Now we are approaching eight.

The WorldBank provides annual data for population, migration, and population density (among many other datasets), so I wanted to explore how these trends are changing and created this dashboard for interactively exploring the data https://www.dashboardom.com/migration-population

There are basically two approaches to exploring the dataset:

• Discovery: when you don't know which countries were the top gainers/losers. The top map and chart provide that, once you specify the year, and select the metric. For example, this shows net migration by country as a percentage of population in 2012.

To make it easier to find out which countries were the top (and bottom), a second chart shows those (once as an absolute number, and once as a percentage of population):

• Exploration: when you have certain countries (or regions) in mind and you want to compare them. You can select those countries and see a time series chart for the metric of your choice:

Three metrics are available to choose from:

1. Net migration: the absolute number of net migrants to (from) a country
2. Net migration: same as above, but provided as a percentage of the population
3. Population density: the number of inhabitants per kilometer square. This is very useful in understanding how crowded a certain country is, but it can be a deceptive metric. There are many large countries with large areas of uninhabitable land, which causes the metric to show a low value. So keep this in mind.
