Migrating your Company Data
Migrating data is both easy and hard. It does not take a $400 per hour consulting company to do iot. But, after serving as an expert witness in over 100 cases, your average local IT shop often is not qualified.
When looking to migrate data, do some tough evaluating. Why are you migrating? Are you moving from an insourcing relationship to outsourcing... or vice versa. Does the data need to be accessed locally? Is it highly graphical or calculative (movies, CAD, VR/AR? Where will the data be backed up and how often and how large?
Does a hybrid approach make sense for the applications, data and/or backup? What are your disaster recovery and business continuity needs? Is virtualization a concern, a necessity? What about work from home? Vendor, supplier, customer and other global facility access?
What about multi-factor authentication? Single sign-on? FERPA, HIPA, SOX and other security and compliance regulations?
These are just a few of the initial questions you have to address. Then you have to look at business impact to operations, software licensing, storage charges, as well as which of a thousand different ways is the bet way to move the data.
Feel free to message me with any questions. My team has migrated over 5 Petabytes of data in 22 countries to over 80 datacenters and over 200 applications. We know a little bit about this stuff.
