Migrating from Magento1 to Magento2 - myths debunked

Migrating from an older version of Magento to a newer one is something that most retailers do not take lightly. The reluctance is even greater when Magento1 is involved. Why? Simply put, it’s a new build. Magento 2 comes with a completely different architecture and database design. These being said, there are many untruths that make merchants want to linger with an unprotected, less performant platform. Here, we try to expose them...

?? Cost of Migration

?? The process often involves significant development work, customizations, theme redesign, and possibly new extensions. Depending on the number of customizations, extensions, the complexity of the store, whether a custom theme is chosen and the rates charged by the agency, the project's cost can span between a few thousands to a few hundred thousands euro.

?? The long-term benefits of migrating to Magento 2 outweigh the expenses. You will get better performance, scalability, and a more efficient backend, which can result in improved conversion rates, higher sales, and lower maintenance costs over time.

? TIPS to save money:

?? Get quotes - you will be amazed on how much rates differ between agencies.

?? Make sure that you find trusted agencies with lots of migrations under the belt. This way you will not only have your project in capable hands, but also ensures that it will be done in a decent timeframe.

?? Downtime

?? The migration is not a simple upgrade, it’s almost a complete rebuild. I can't afford to have my store inactive.

?? No problem here... development work can be done in a staging environment, meaning your live store can continue running without any interruptions during the migration process.

? We won't lie... no matter as much testing we put in during development work, there are still a few glitches happening after going live. But with a good team of developers behind you, you should be up and running in no time.

?? Fear of custom development

?? My Magento1 store has highly customized extensions and integrations. Migrating these to Magento2 means rewriting code which adds to the development costs.

?? The Magento Marketplace has expanded significantly and there's a good chance you will find replacements or even superior alternatives to your existing custom integrations, often reducing the need for expensive custom development.

? TIPS to save money

?? Simply get an audit done and make sure that you don't keep any extensions that are not necessary.

?? Comfort

?? I'm comfortable with my existing Magento 1 setup. The platform has been stable and meeting my needs, so I don't see a pressing reason to switch.

?? We say 'fair enough'... but ??? BEWARE! Adobe has stopped supplying the necessary security patches for Magento1. Without them, stores are highly susceptible to cyberattacks.

So, our question is... would you rather be comfortable with an old, unsupported platform that may expose your business to security risks, or feel confident with a modern, fully supported platform that offers enhanced security and even more, is prepared for the future, supporting #ai - powered functionalities?

Spot on approach! Some questions: can you do the audit for custom implementations? Based on your experience, is the standardisation development after the audit a big effort/cost ?
