Mightier Ducks
To the Romans, ducks are a symbol of good fortune, abundance and prosperity.? But did you know that ducks are also heroes?? During a midnight Gaul invasion ducks awakened the Roman soldiers, quacking relentlessly, alerting them to the looming threat.? The Romans prevailed.? The rest is history.?
The Romans went on to engineer and build lasting and significant infrastructure and edifices.? They developed innovative building techniques and materials.? Specifically, Romans formulated concrete and introduced structural arches. They introduced the idea of public works.? These means and methods defined Roman expansion with the construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, water and wastewater, and iconic structures standing strong for over 2,000 years.? The Romans also harnessed wind and water for power.? Power that enabled their ability to build, battle, conquer, boost the Roman Empire’s magnitude, and ultimately influence our civilization.
Rome was not built in a day – but, they were laying bricks every hour of every day.
From soldiers and builders to the Roman concept of jurisprudence including "innocent until proven guilty," many Roman attributes are still relevant to today’s legal system which means construction lawyers and professionals are modern day Romans.
SOCOTEC experts will be in Las Vegas at the upcoming ABA Forum on Construction Law Midwinter Meeting sharing insights into our industry and how we connect with Romans, ducks, hockey, power and construction law.
POWER PROJECT PRINCIPLES
With extensive experience in the power generation sector, from solar and wind to hydroelectric and nuclear, SOCOTEC Engineering has helped countless clients navigate the challenges of power projects from inception, design, and construction through commissioning, operation, and decommissioning.? Positioning power projects for success is predicated on proper engineering practices – the Power Project Principles.?
PREPARE – The design phase is of paramount importance.? Errors and oversights in a design can be costly at best but also potentially dangerous to human life during construction and operation.? SOCOTEC Engineering has a long history of performing independent design reviews to ensure code compliance, public safety, constructability, and longevity.
PREDICT – Identifying components and connections that are susceptible to fatigue and fracture is a specialty of SOCOTEC Engineering.? Through a combination of advanced stress analysis and data acquisition using strain gages and other sensors, it is possible to pinpoint problem areas and predict their probable service lives.
PREVENT – As the adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.? Armed with the knowledge of problem areas and their service lives, SOCOTEC Engineering can prescribe inspection and maintenance protocols to identify issues before they become critical and provide repair procedures and retrofit designs to increase useful service life and mitigate costly unplanned outages.
PROVE – In the event that your power project does not go to plan, SOCOTEC Engineering can provide incident response, evidence preservation, and forensic analysis.? Combining metallurgical examination and advanced simulation capabilities, the root cause of failure can be proven with our engineering excellence and demonstrated with our expert testimony.? Our proven track record of favorable rulings and settlements for our clients speaks for itself.
With the appropriate proactive approach, you can keep your power project on track and prevent potential problems from pushing it off the path to success.? If perchance you find yourself in a pickle, SOCOTEC Engineering is here for you to solve your power project problems.
