Might be the Least Known Feature: Wake-on-LAN

Thinking, How to Turn on your Computer or other Devices Remotely?

In the following article, I will be discussing mostly everything related to Wake-on-LAN such as "How to Setup" or "How it works' So, keep scrolling and Learning!

What is Wake-on-LAN?

Wake-on-LAN is a Network Protocol that works with the Second Layer of the OSI Model also known as the Data-Link Layer, It allows computers or devices to be turned on remotely, doesn't matter whether it's hibernating, sleeping, or completely powered off.

Tech Tip: Wake-on-LAN or WoL is also known by many other names such as ?remote wake-up, power on by LAN, resume by LAN and even wake up on LAN

How does It Work?

The process that takes place behind this protocol is very simple, Devices get turned ON by sending a Magic Packet through your LAN Wire.

It does not matter which Operating System you use or prefer to install, it does support most of them. You can use this feature on either your Windows Device or macOS or Even many Linux Kernel distributions. there are two things that you have to set up to use this feature through your setup.

BIOS

To make it work, we need the?computer?hardware?must support Wake-on-LAN with a compatible?BIOS?and?Network card.

Configuring BIOS

  • Open your BIOS Menu on your Laptop or a Computer or any other supported device instead of booting into your operating system.

Tech Tip:
Every Motherboard has a separte keyboard key to open BIOS but most common one is "DELETE"
Just Press it for long or if this doesn't work just search it on Google.

  • Check Power or Advance Section or Something related to LAN, Every Motherboard Manufacturer does have a separate help page where you can find the exact setting name, etc.
  • Turn ON the WoL setting and make a Reboot!

Operating System

For Windows

Now we have to just Setup our OS, Let's see how...

  • Search for Task Manager and simply open it.
  • Select the Network adapters?or select the?+?or?>?button next to it to expand that section
  • Right-click on the adapter that belongs to the active internet connection. Examples of what you might see are?Realtek Family Controller?or?Intel Network, but it varies depending on the Computer or Laptop.
  • Open Properties and navigate to Advanced
