This Might Help You
I recently received a note from a good friend in California who is struggling a little bit. I think many of us are going to the same things he is, so I wanted to share our email conversation with you.
I hope you may help me with guidance. I have been in my divisional role for eight years. I am burnt out. I have lost my ability to think like I used too. I have been with the company 23 years and pray to retire here. I used to love my job. Any book suggestions on how I can reinvent myself please? Thank you.
Bill, thank you very much for sending the note. I want to begin by saying what you are feeling is entirely normal. I’m coaching several executives around the world and everyone, including me, is feeling overwhelmed. Many of us are burned out, tired all the time, have difficulty thinking, and are experiencing high stress and anxiety levels (that was a fun sentence to write!). So, I just want you to know that you’re not alone. Also, if these feelings become acute, please do not be afraid to ask for help. Many professionals out there can help you deal with the emotional roller coaster that has become life during the pandemic. It’s not a sign of weakness but a genuine sign of strength to admit that you need help.
I don’t know if I can recommend a book to help you reinvent yourself, but I can recommend a few to help you refocus on the most important things. The first is written by a very close friend of mine, Tom Morris. I recommend his book, The Art of Achievement. It’s a solid book on the key things that each of us needs to focus on to create a more successful, happy, and balanced life. Tom is a philosopher and an uncommonly gifted writer. Everything he puts out is superb.
Another book, short and easy to read, is titled A Strategy For Daily Living by Ari Kiev. He is a therapist, and one of his clients asked him to create a list of the things she needed to focus on to make her life better. I have probably read this book 20+ times.
Go through those, and if you want some more book recommendations or to chat, just let me know.
I wish you every possible happiness and success – John

3 年John Spence thank you for sharing. Indeed, it is quite normal to feel what your friend spoke about. Last one year has been a test of my true character. I have had my own bouts of anxiety attacks if I may use such a strong word. And yes- strongly resonate with what you mentioned tht it’s a strength to admit what one is going through rather than pushing it under the carpet and pushing it away. I guess we all go through what we go through. I have recently posted few questions around the same: What if I realise tht whatever I am going though is only getting me ready for the bigger game for tomorrow? What if I realise tht life is happening for me rather than to me? Thank you my friend for sharing your thoughts. Respect and Shukrana ??????
