PRESS RELEASE 3.28.24
DALLAS, TX— As the cost of living, housing prices, and inflation continue to rise, the need for food assistance in Texas has never been greater. According to the ALICE Report, 42% of Texans now fall between the poverty line and the asset-limited, income-constrained, employed (ALICE), which means that a large percentage of Texans are simply not making it each month. Midwest Food Bank Texas is rising to the challenge, serving over 127,000 people every month through its food pantry partners. This represents a 71% increase in our total food distribution volume.?
Executive Director Gareth Keown reports "46% of our food pantries now report that more than 50% of their food supply comes from Midwest Food Bank Texas." He says, "This is a concerning trend as other more established food banks in the area are cutting back on food supplies while demand continues to skyrocket. However, we are grateful to be able to serve so many people every month through our food pantry partners. We believe that no one should have to go hungry, and we are fortunate to help those who need it the most."
Midwest Food Bank Texas distributes free food at bulk to 103 food pantry partner agencies in Texas and beyond, marking a 103% increase of food pantry partners from 2022.? Increasing the number of food pantries served is a testament to its staff and volunteers' hard work and dedication as well as a statement of its long-term commitment to the region and fighting food insecurity.
