Mideast snapshot: Qatar said to explore Premier League deal, Egypt's currency woes and more

This newsletter is finally back from a hiatus necessitated by the World Cup (then post-World Cup vacation)! Hope 2023 is treating you all well so far. Some of my final analysis as that event grows more distant in the rear-view mirror: Qatar’s World Cup Building Frenzy Reaches Its Day of Reckoning

To the present -- here's a look at some of the stories I'm watching as I start my day as Bloomberg's Doha-based Middle East TV correspondent. Your thoughts most welcome.

Putin’s Energy Gambit Fizzles as Warm Winter Saves Europe. "Mild weather, a wider array of suppliers and efforts to reduce demand are helping, with gas reserves still nearly full and prices tumbling to?pre-war levels...While a cold snap or delivery disruptions could still throw energy markets into disarray, optimism is growing that Europe can now make it through this winter and next."

Israel Orders Crackdown on Palestinian Flags as Tensions Simmer. Israel's new, right-wing government is already picking controversial fights, this time by cracking down on public displays of Palestinian flags. (Worth noting: Palestinian flags were omnipresent at Qatar's World Cup last month, including during post-match celebrtaions.)

Iran Sentences More Anti-Government Protesters to Death. Protests continue, but with an intensifying crackdown and still mostly united regime, demonstrators' hopes for more sweeping change may prove out of reach.

OPINION: The World’s Most Important Election in 2023 Will Be in Turkey. Bloomberg columnist Bobby Ghosh writes that "the outcome will shape geopolitical and economic calculations in Washington and Moscow, as well as capitals across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa." Western leaders would be happy to see President Erdogan go, but it's far from certain that a fractured opposition can unite to stop him -- even with inflation at 64% year-on-year in December.
