The Middle Years

The Middle Years

Today, I stand at the threshold of a journey that is deeply personal and meaningful to me. Welcome to "The Middle Years" – a series of posts where I recount my life's journey as an Orthopaedic surgeon, delving into experiences, challenges and motivations that have guided my path.

My commitment to Orthopaedic surgery was ignited by a profound moment that occurred when I was 20. It was a moment that left an indelible mark on my heart and propelled me towards a purposeful life. My grandfather, ‘my favourite’, suffered from knee arthritis and his quality of life was impacted for many years, as he refused to have surgery. One ill-fated day, he fell in the bathroom and broke his right hip. He had to subsequently undergo a surgery, which was followed by a series of unfortunate health issues ultimately resulting in his demise.

It took me a long time to come to terms with this - the very painful and compromised quality of life that he had to endure. He lived through pain for far longer than he should have, fearing the uncertainties that knee surgery presented. Every time I look back, I firmly believe that had I been a surgeon then, I could have made a difference.

That belief led me to chose my profession, to make a difference to the lives of patients. Each morning, as I step out of home, I pray that I may do the right thing for my patients and help heal them.

Through "The Middle Years," I hope to share my journey, inspire others, demystify the world of Orthopaedic surgery, and share the lessons I've learned. I am grateful for this journey, for all the wonderful people I have met and the lessons learnt.

How did you choose your profession? Is there a moment that influenced you?
