The middle of the rink
My first ice skating session was spent on the edges of the rink where it’s impeccably safe.?
The chance of falling on your butt while your arm is glued to the railing is basically 0.?
The major limitation of this “style” of skating, however, is that the effective area you can skate around is very limited because you cannot go beyond arm’s length from the railing.
Don’t even get me started with the ordeal of passing other people who are also clinging to the railing.?
Perhaps you can see by now the classic dilemma that ice skating presents:
If you want maximum safety, you only get to experience a tiny, itty-bitty portion of the rink.
If you want to explore the rink freely, you have to be willing to let go of the railings and accept the risk of falling.
Such is skating.
Such is life.?
