Welcome back and Happy New Year (Perhaps a tad too late to say it now, I know…)

Despite the doom and gloom of economics, the continued war in Europe, everyone striking and everything else in the news - I’m still feeling optimistic about the year ahead.

I’ve made some strong commitments to myself this year which include getting fitter and stronger, cutting down alcohol to almost zero, and doubling down on the effort and growth of my company, Marketing Mouse.

I’d like to explore a new hobby as well. Let’s see...

I hope my fellow marketers, business owners and professionals are feeling optimistic about the year ahead too. Let me know your 2023 ambitions!

This year, I’ll also continue to cover everything you need to know in the world of digital marketing.

Microsoft to invest $10B in Chat GPT and incorporate features into Bing and Office

Last month Chat GPT exploded across the internet and we took a look at how the technology could influence digital marketers and SEO.

This month the hysteria continues into 2023 with Microsoft reportedly looking to invest $10 billion in the OpenAI language model. The investment would take the value of the company to $29 billion.

Microsoft will get a 49% stake and receive 75% of profits until they recoup their initial investment. The move could be monumental for Microsoft who will be at the forefront of what could be the most important consumer technology over the next decade.

It’s also been widely reported that Microsoft would be looking to integrate Chat GPT into office products such as Word and Outlook. Additionally, and more excitingly, reports also suggest that ChatGPT could be integrated into Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, as early as March.

Google consistently dominate the search engine space enjoying around 90% market share. Could this latest move swing momentum towards Bing?

Three new SEO tips from Google

Search engine optimisation professionals and digital marketers should take of three new tipcs announced this week by Google:

Move JavaScript below HTML headers – John Mueller responds to a Reddit post advising that JavaScript code should be placed below the HTML header tag to ensure search crawlers can fully understand your website.

Product reviews should link to multiple sellers – Google developer, Alen Kent, says product reviews linking to multiple sellers may get a ranking boost over reviews linking to one. Alan responded on Twitter confirming Google’s documentation on how to write high-quality product reviews.

Add multiple date signals on webpages – Google search liaison, Danny Sullivan, recommends using multiple date signals to ensure the correct date is displayed in search results. He directed people to Google’s documentation on article best practices and byline dates

Meta tightens restrictions around advertising to teens

Last year, Meta removed the ability for advertisers to target teens based on their interests and activities. From next month only age and location will be the only information advertisers on Facebook and Instagram can use to target teenagers under the age of 18. Ads teenagers see will also no longer be informed by their engagement.

In March, Meta have also announced that they will be giving teens more control over the types of ads they see by expanding Ad Topic Controls.

Meta fined £346m for breaking EU data rules for targeted ads

After being fined €265m (£228m) by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) in November, Meta have once again found themselves at the receiving end of a stinging fine.

In November, it was for a data breach that saw the personal details of hundreds of millions of Facebook users published online.

This time round Meta has been fined €390m euros (£346m) for breaking EU data rules.

The DPC says the way Meta asked permission to use peoples' data for ads on Facebook and Instagram was unlawful.

BrewDog CEO pays out £500,000 and admits fault over gold can fiasco

James Watt, co-founder and chief executive of BrewDog has admitted to making “some costly mistakes” over a Willy Wonka-inspired promotion, which hid 50 gold cans in cases of beer.

James said he "misunderstood the process of how they were made" and made a "silly mistake" by telling customers in initial promotional tweets that the cans were "solid gold cans". When they were in fact gold-plated and largely made of brass.

“All in all, it ended up costing me around £470,000 – well over two and a half years’ salary,” said Watt.
