Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) is a versatile, all-purpose web server that works with Windows operating systems to provide requested HTML files or pages.Requests from distant client PCs are accepted by an IIS web server, which then provides the necessary answer. Web servers may share and distribute content across wide area networks (WAN), like the Internet, and local area networks (LAN), like business intranets, thanks to this fundamental functionality.Users can get information from a web server in a variety of formats, including text documents, image files, static HTML webpages, file exchanges like uploads and downloads, and more.
Portals are offered by web servers.A business and its users can benefit from significantly more capability offered by modern web servers. Web servers are frequently employed as entry points for complex, highly interactive web-based applications that link back-end programs and enterprise middleware to build enterprise-class systems. For instance, a web-based portal provided by Amazon Web Services enables users to manage public cloud services. In the meantime, web servers are used by streaming media services—like Netflix for movies and Spotify for music—to provide live streaming material.

How IIS functionsA multitude of standard languages and protocols are used by IIS to function. Elements like text, buttons, image placements, direct interactions and activities, and hyperlinks are all created with HTML. The fundamental communication protocol that web servers and users utilize to transmit information is called the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).Transport Layer protection, also known as SSL, is used by HTTPS—HTTP over Secure Sockets Layer—to encrypt communication for increased data protection. File transfers can be done via the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or its secure version, File Transfer Protocol Secure (FTPS).
Additional protocols that are supported are the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), which is used to transmit articles on USENET, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which is used to send and receive email.
