Microsoft is going nuclear to power its AI ambitions
Microsoft has listed a new job for a "Principal Program Manager Nuclear Technology," indicating they are exploring Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for their energy needs.
The new hire will be responsible for integrating SMR and other microreactor designs into Microsoft Cloud's data centers, creating a roadmap for SMR deployment and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
Despite the current prototype stage of SMRs, Microsoft aims to be at the forefront of using compact nuclear reactors for energy, supplemented by a previous deal with Helion Energy for developing a fusion energy device.
Meta debuts its ChatGPT competitor, Meta AI
Meta is introducing a new virtual assistant, Meta AI, which uses a large language model and image generator to answer questions and create images from text.
The assistant will be available through Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, assisting with tasks such as making travel plans, among other things.
Meta's AI launches also include chatbots based on celebrities and two AI tools for image editing, all of which are aimed at rivaling OpenAI's latest offerings.
Legendary iPhone designer in talks with OpenAI about hardware AI device
OpenAI, primarily known for its AI software, is exploring a move into hardware with reported discussions involving CEO Sam Altman and renowned product designer Jony Ive.
Potential hardware projects could include an AI-integrated smartphone, although nothing is concrete as of yet and some experts caution that such a pivot could serve as a major distraction.
Jony Ive, known for his design contributions to iconic Apple devices, left Apple in 2019 and has since been involved in various design projects including a high-end turntable and a logo for a sustainable practices framework.
