Microsoft Fabric March 2024 Update
A quick update this month and some exciting news too!? Make sure you read to the end. ??
The Microsoft March Power BI and Fabric update blogs were released on 26th and 27th March respectively – quite late again this month.? As per usual the Fabric one contains all the content that is in the Power BI one so you only need to watch one or the other if you feel you need to.? Here are the links if you do:
Some monthly update releases don’t contain anything that I particularly want to “shout from the rooftops” and this was one of those months.? Here, however, are a few things that may be of interest:
On-Object Interaction Updates
Since the On-Object editing was first released into preview it has met with mixed reactions and had several changes.? This latest one aims to deliver the end user the best of the old experience along with the best of the new experience.? Whilst I have been toying with On-Object Interaction for a while, I kept finding myself going back to the old experience – perhaps now it has got past that point and Microsoft will release the feature from preview – we shall see.
The pane switcher has been renamed to Pane manager and using this this is more convenient than going to the view ribbon to turn panes on and off.
Enhanced row-level security editor is Enabled by Default
This saves having to write DAX snippets when setting up row level security.? You can still switch to the DAX view though if you prefer.

OneLake File Explorer: Editing via Excel
This is interesting but I don’t quite get where this is heading.?
If you didn’t know there is a add on for File Explorer that you can download from the service.?
This allows you to browse files stored in OneLake just as though they were on OneDrive.? Now we can edit Excel files that we see in OneLake through File Explorer and, I presume, that we will soon be able to edit other file types too.?
Will OneLake and OneDrive become One? ??? Why would we need both?? Of course OneDrive is included with our 365 licensing and OneLake costs extra for storage but might that change?? Again, time will tell.
And now for that news!
I am very pleased to announce that today my new business commenced trading.? Rupe Ltd (trading simply as rupe) specialises in Power BI Training, Coaching, Support, Consultancy and Innovation Services.? Associated technologies (such as Microsoft Fabric) will also be supported and we continue to promote data visualisation best practice principles.
We have lots of public training planned including partnering with Microsoft to deliver the free public Power BI Dashboard in a Day (DIAD) events once a fortnight.? We offer private training for organisations too.
The website is embryonic so please bear with us whilst we build out the content but I hope you like the way it has been built!? www.rupe.co.uk
If you have any questions (or indeed feedback on the website) please send an email to [email protected].
I look forward to exciting times.
