At MICROSOFT IGNITE, (@MICROSOFT IGNITE ) 微软 's Annual Developer Conference Nov 2023, Company has introduced 2 custom-designed chips Microsoft Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator & Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 CPU.

Microsoft Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator optimized for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and meet the requirements of, to optimize the tasks for Generative AI (Gen AI), and the Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100 CPU, Arm-based processor CPU for Azure Cloud, The general purpose CPU based compute tasks.

Microsoft Azure Maia 100, This is very 1st in the series of Maia AI boosters customized for upcoming demand of Generative AI, with of almost 105 billion transistors.

Microsoft Cobalt 100 CPU is built on Arm architecture, a type of energy-efficient chip design, and optimized to deliver greater efficiency and performance in cloud native offerings. The architecture and implementation is designed with power efficiency and to meet company's sustainability goals.

Customized Data Center, Rack/ Cabinets & Server Board.

Microsoft build its own customized servers and racks/cabinets. There is no racks/cabinets existed to mount or meet the requirements of the Maia 100 server boards. So Microsoft customized the design first then built the same from bottom. These cabinets are way much bigger and wider than what typically sits in normal server cabinets in usual seen datacenters. That expanded design provides more space for both power and networking cables and upcoming all passive essential requirements for the unique demands of AI workloads.

To make room in data centers for the Microsoft Maia 100 AI Accelerator, Microsoft developed custom server racks. A custom-built rack for the Maia 100 AI Accelerator and its “sidekick” inside a thermal chamber at a Microsoft lab in Redmond, Washington. The sidekick acts like a car radiator, cycling liquid to and from the rack to cool the chips as they handle the computational demands of AI workloads.

These sidekick racks are wider than the typical Microsoft server format and sit next to the Microsoft Maia 100 rack. Liquid cooling fluid runs from the sidekick to the Maia 100 rack and back, creating a cooler environment. The custom racks could be used with silicon from industry partners.

Microsoft plans to expand that set of options in the future; it is already designing second-generation versions of the Azure Maia AI Accelerator series and the Azure Cobalt CPU series.

Liftr Insights has tracked its deployments since the beginning of time, "32.9% of new CPUs deployed on Azure?in the fourth quarter of 2024 were Arm-based chips. Specifically, these Arm-based processors were Azure's new Cobalt 100 chipset." https://liftrinsights.com/series/arm-rising/arms-influence-rising-at-microsoft?utm_source=email&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=arm+33
