Welcome to our first Microphone Monday! Taking a quick look at the RCA Type 77-D.
In the words of Robb Spewak (of The Mike O'Meara show and Podville Media ):
"The classic and beautiful 77-D was introduced by RCA in 1945.??It is easily recognizable by its streamlined art-deco inspired “pill shape”… the round escutcheon on the back… and the??iconic “RCA Meatball” logo on the front.??It is a “velocity-style” or “ribbon mic” that uses a thin piece of electrically conductive ribbon placed between the poles of a magnet to produce a voltage by electromagnetic induction.??By adjusting the dial within the escutcheon, the mic has six individual pick-up patterns and various frequency attenuations made possible?by a shutter and a labyrinth within the mic housing.??The mic is especially heavy and measures 11 inches in height.??Though out of production for over 65 years, it is still sought after by studios and recording engineers for its remarkable sound.??Its amazing design has come to represent broadcasting and through the years, a 77 has graced the desks of Johnny Carson, Larry King, David Letterman, and countless others."
