The Microlearning Meetup Newsletter #6
WELCOME to newsletter #6
It's been a busy quarter at work, so apologies for the hiatus between newsletters. This will be the last newsletter of 2022. In this issue I ponder (briefly) what it means to 'learn in the flow of work', and share a number of links to a variety of things I've found interesting over the past few months.
Happy Holidays and see you in 2023!
The views and opinions expressed in this newsletter are mine, and are in no way connected to my employer, or any individuals or companies that may be mentioned in this newsletter.

1. LEARNING IN THE FLOW OF WORK... REALLY?!
I've struggled with this idea of 'learning in the flow of work' for awhile now. It's one of those phrases that sounds great and plausible, and I've used it many times, but the more I think about it, the more I struggle with it. And the reason I struggle with it, is that it's still so tied to some kind of underlying content/learning delivery platform. And we need to tie them in, because we need to measure how effective the platform is. I'm simplifying things, I know, and just who do I think I am questioning the idea of 'learning in the flow of work'?
But what happens when employees have had enough? What happens when they go elsewhere to find the answers? What happens when they go elsewhere because it delivers exactly what they are after?
The notion of 'learning in the flow of work' to me, still seems tied to a moment in time, tied to some kind of corporate technology. Rather than unleashing employees, setting them free, it continues to tie them in.
But what happens if we do truly set employees free? Is it a decision we even have? What could learning in the flow of work really look like in that moment? What value do L&D departments offer? Do you actually know the value you offer your learners? After they've been to Google, YouTube, TikTok (yes, even TikTok), specialist forums, colleagues, etc, what is the value left for you to offer? What will your contribution be? Do you know... have you really thought about it...

2 年Guy Stephens do you have any good links on "flipped classrooms" - I'm organising a session in a metaverse space which will primarily be about the networking and a panel conversation rather than absorbing the learning per se. To make this work I'm particularly interested to know any tips on getting participants to engage in material (i.e. "the pre-reading" in old money) in advance. Do ideas like "take the quiz and see what you know already" work? Do videos work better than articles? etc. etc. ??
