The Microlearning Meetup newsletter #2

WELCOME

Welcome to the second newsletter published by The Microlearning Meetup. In this issue, we cover:

  • Sabrina Meherally's talk on how we think about the learner when designing (micro)learning
  • a conversation with Nidhi Sachdeva on the research she is doing on the use of microlearning in higher education
  • and the usual bits on events, microbites and what's coming down the line.

My intention was to publish this newsletter once a month, but actually I've been eager to get another issue out sooner, as there's lots happening in the microlearning space and I didn't want you to miss out. Okay, I didn't want to miss out.

Happy creating!

1. DO YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT YOUR LEARNER?

In a recent event put on by The Microlearning Meetup, Sabrina Meherally (Founder & CEO, Pause & Effect) shared her thoughts on how we need to be thinking about our learners.

It was a very thought-provoking session which challenged us to consider how we currently design learning experiences, including the content. Are we more likely to design or prioritise for learners, and create personas, who are similar to us? Do we ever consider those learners that we have, by default, de-prioritised or who may exist at the margins of our lived experiences?

Inherent in this design process, perhaps any design process, is the centering of certain privileged dimensions of identity; captured in the learning persona(s) we have created. The learning we create reflects this privileging.

Sabrina recognises we can't design experiences or content that covers all learners, but we can at least extend open lines of feedback to all groups of learners.

I really encourage you to listen to Sabrina's session, consider the four reflection questions, and then consider how you might think about the learner the next time you create a piece of (micro)learning.

3. IN CONVERSATION WITH...

I had the pleasure of speaking with Nidhi Sachdeva, PhD who is researching the role of microlearning in higher education for her PhD.

In this short video Nidhi Sachdeva shares her thoughts on mobile learning, Cognitive Load Theory, applying theory to designing microlearning and what she's learnt from creating her own microlearning. The full length video, which contains more information about her research, can be accessed on our YouTube channel.

Delighted to let you all know that Nidhi has also agreed to speak at a future meetup.

4. VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

If you've got a spare 21 minutes (or less if you play around with playback speed), check out this video from Carla Torgerson, MEd, MBA and Tim Slade who answer a variety of questions about designing microlearning.

Questions include how long should microlearning be, how many topics should you cover, and how can you calculate the impact and ROI of microlearning amongst others.

5. MICROBITES

Microlearning and Millennials [Webinar 2020]: If you're interested in learning more about how microlearning may be a good fit for millennials then listen to Anu Galhotra, CPTD (Infopro Learning) share her thoughts. Much of the information you will likely have heard before, but it does bring the thinking together in one place in a coherent, structured and informative way. You will need to register to listen to the recording. Click here for the webinar recording [56m 33s].

Chatbots & Microlearning [Webinar 2022]: If you're interested in microlearning via chatbots, then this webinar from Vince Han (CEO/Founder, Mobile Coach) will serve as a good introduction and overview, including use cases, of what can be achieved. Click here for the webinar recording [48m 51s].

Delivering job aids with 7taps around 24 countries [Online conference 2022]: In this case study from 7taps, Dr. Dawn DiPeri , shares her experience at Unicef on the need for inclusive microlearning design when creating job aids for a multicultural audience. Watch the YouTube video [28m 29s] of her session.

Microlearning in 2022 - Still relevant? [ebook]: Discover why microlearning in 2022 is still relevant and how you can leverage it. To download your copy of this ebook produced by Tesseract Learning, click here.

6. FOR THE FUTURE

Feature: I'm thinking about doing a 'micro' feature on text- and messaging-based microlearning to better understand what it is, how it works, the benefits, use cases, and which companies are offering it.

Upcoming events from The Microlearning Meetup: What microlearning can learn from TikTok, Netflix and Webtoons (October) ; Infographics and microlearning (November) ; Andragogy and other theories (2023) ; The role of video in microlearning (2023).

"Text and messaging based micro learning" Sounds intriguing. Would love to learn about people's experiments with this.
