Microlearning - Designed for Ad-hoc Learning Environments
“Hey, are you about to check your phone even though you know that it hasn’t beeped since the last time you checked… may be ten minutes?”?
Bersin already have studied this short attention span. He states that there is a problem with our generation, we the modern learners – the Millennial employees! According to his research, we have too many things in our mind at a time and often juggling into multiple tasks. We get interrupted every five minutes, and if that is not distracting enough, we unlock our mobiles up to nine times an hour. Already daily chores and activities are demanding enough with an ever-increasing number of things competing for attention. This relates to online learning as well, learners like to watch videos, but they don’t watch much beyond the first four minutes–so the first 5-10 seconds are vital in grabbing their attention and getting your point across.
Concurrently, ad hoc training is starting to become a large theme in e-Learning. Today’s learners are used to being able to instantly access learning materials that only comprise just what they need at that time. For example, if you want to learn how to use a specific function in Microsoft Excel, you may do a quick search for a YouTube video. Thus, resources have to be relevant and immediately applicable.
As we have already read about Micro-learning, a type of learning with bite-sized and specific content, answers to the need for short and appealing content, as well as to the rise of ad hoc training. Additionally, having these short training sprints also allows for more frequent learning, as 5–10-minute content chunks, such as a podcast. In this type of micro-learning, the learner is the one in control, and is thus more likely to be engaged in the learning experience, leading to more learning and?better knowledge retention over time.
