Automotive designers are looking to replace traditional gateway subsystems with technologies that migrate applications to Ethernet networks for easy access to information from the edge to the cloud. To provide OEMs with automotive-grade Ethernet solutions, Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the release of the first automotive-grade Ethernet PHYs. The 10BASE-T1S family of devices is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified and includes models LAN8670, LAN8671, and LAN8672.

The LAN8670/1/2 10BASE-T1S Ethernet PHY is functional safety ready and designed for ISO 26262 applications. With these devices, low-speed devices that previously required their own communication systems can now be connected to standard Ethernet systems in automotive applications.

Microchip continues to prioritize connectivity solutions for the automotive industry with the introduction of the 10BASE-T1S family, said Matthias Kaestner, vice president of Microchip's Automotive Products Business Unit. This new technology will connect sensors and actuators used in the physical world all the way to the cloud.,?making seamless Ethernet architecture ubiquitous.

Connecting multiple Ethernet PHYs to a common bus line simplifies deployment of automotive applications on a single popular architecture while saving deployment costs by reducing wiring and switch ports. The LAN8670/1/2 enables the network edge to easily communicate with the rest of the network infrastructure using Ethernet and Internet Protocol (IP). These devices include advanced PHY diagnostics to provide users with troubleshooting capabilities. In addition, the sleep/wake function supports low-power modes.

Features of 10BASE-T1S devices include 10 Mbps, half-duplex mode, flexible point-to-point topology, multiple bus lines, and use of a single pair of balanced wires. The devices also feature enhanced electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference (EMC/EMI) performance and support for time-sensitive networking (TSN), which enables synchronized timing across long-distance Ethernet networks. Time synchronization is critical to many applications throughout the automotive partition architecture.

Microchip is one of the main contributors to the development of the IEEE automotive-grade 10BASE-T1S technical standard. This technology simplifies system design by extending the reach of Ethernet to devices that are often at the very edge of the network.
