Microchip Insider: Power Your Solution with Microchip Power over Ethernet (PoE) Solutions

Welcome to this edition of Microchip Insider, where we bring you the latest innovations, insights and a behind-the-scenes look at Microchip solutions. This week, we’re diving into Power over Ethernet (PoE) .

As demand grows for efficient and reliable power delivery over standard Ethernet infrastructure, Microchip is at the forefront with PoE solutions designed to meet your needs. Microchip has been developing PoE solutions for over 25 years, contributing to the IEEE Ethernet standards for PoE and developing several IEEE 802.3af/at/bt-compliant PoE ICs and systems.

In this edition, we explore our multi-PoE technology, describe a new power-efficient and surge-focused PoE PSE chipset, and offer tips, tactics and much more. We invite you to discover the resources we’ve selected to introduce you to Microchip’s PoE solutions and how they can power a rapidly growing variety of devices on your network with unparalleled flexibility, scalability and reliability.

Not all PoE is Built the Same

Microchip’s multi-Power over Ethernet (mPoE) technology allows you to power any wired network device seamlessly and efficiently through backward compatibility with pre-standard devices while supporting all IEEE?? PoE standards. This makes mPoE the ideal solution not only for traditional IP-based devices but also 5G small cells, LoRa? gateways, LED luminaires, access control terminals and other IoT devices. mPoE and its unique algorithm are designed to ensure pre-standard Powered Devices (PDs) can work alongside new IEEE 802.3bt-compliant PDs in a single Ethernet infrastructure. These benefits can be achieved without changing existing switches or cabling by using our PoE injectors/midspans and switches.

Power-Efficient PoE PSE Chipset Designed for Improved Surge Protection

Our new seventh-generation IEEE? 802.3bt-compliant PoE Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) IC chipset is specifically designed to provide a power-efficient and surge-focused solution for PoE switches, PoE midspans/injectors and wireless routers. It includes a PoE PSE controller plus a PoE PSE manager with an internal surge protection circuitry that withstands a 2 kV surge per the IEC surge immunity standard. This enhances system reliability in the event of a lightning strike or internal event such as an electric motor turning on inside an HVAC system.
