Microbusinesses: The Starting Line for the American Dream

Microbusinesses are the start of the American Dream. An entrepreneur, inspired by an idea and determined to make it work, takes the courageous step to start, to believe. Once they start, our research shows that the positive economic impact they create is bigger than their business. It often extends to their families and communities. Measuring that impact is part of the reason we created Venture Forward.

GoDaddy research, including biannual surveys of U.S. small business owners and one just published that focuses on their beliefs and attitudes toward the concept of the American Dream, shows people make a deliberate choice to be an entrepreneur. According to our data, 80% of U.S. small businesses started their venture out of opportunity. This means they weren’t necessarily compelled to start the microbusiness due to a lack of other employment or earning options; instead, they recognized an opportunity and seized it.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the American Dream as “the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.” At GoDaddy , our mission goes one step further - to make opportunity inclusive for all.

If we consider the framing of the American Dream and that parents are typically more honest about their outlook for their children, our February national survey tells us 4 out of 5 microbusiness owners who are parents have a positive outlook for their business, more than entrepreneurs with no kids by about 10%. In addition, parents tend to be more ambitious, with 70% wanting to grow their business, compared to 41% with no kids who want to stay small and as solo entrepreneurs.

According to our recent survey on the American Dream, just under two-thirds (62%) of small business owners are confident they will achieve their definition of success.
