Micro-Managers vs Macro-Managers

Micro-Managers vs Macro-Managers

What do these terms mean?

Micromanagers are essentially people who would like to know each, and every step taken to obtain a specific task. It can often be observant of the work of employees, scrutinizing work, or going over it with a fine-tooth comb. It’s a mindset that has a controlling perspective and always has ways to surveillance and monitors subsequent ideas and plans.

?Macro managers on the other hand is a detached model, where the basis of work done is primarily on trust and dependency. They definitely are in regular contact and updating of the work completed and up to date with targets and deadlines. Giving the people space, they need and sometimes even able to let ideas and innovation flow on its own from the designated desks or people.

?Traits of a manager:

  • Accountability
  • Character
  • Cultural affinity
  • Prioritization
  • Warmth
  • Patience
  • Honesty
  • Decisiveness
  • Empathy
  • Positive attitude
  • Competence
  • Flexibility

Which is better?

In the context of management, we always need to understand that there has to be a balance between both, and also strategies need to incorporate Micro and Macro level thinking. In this age and era, sticking to just one way of work culture will never do the cut. You would see employees taking advantage, or it could even send out a wrong message too. As managers and as people developers we need to build and nurture a mindset that will bring ease to the employees but at the same time inculcate the seriousness of targets/outputs required.

There is a generic misunderstanding that Micro-management is “BAD”, this is only because of the way it is done and the way we come across to the people we work with. Micromanagers also often display a lack of trust in their co-workers and subordinates because of the way they ask the questions, the way they track them around, and so on. Any business or product to succeed in the market needs to have creativity and innovation, this can only be brought in with the help of motivating and developing those around you. The bad aura of Micro-Management is that there is always a single point of view and never a collective discussion, so this in turn cuts of the creative and innovative side.

Macro management on the other hand can come in handy in many ways, where we need to understand the personal differences and yet come together to build out something for the bigger picture. It involves a lot of trust, confidence, and patience. A lot of the times what works for those who work around you is knowing that there is someone to support and play a helping hand in learning. Often times Macro Management can bring in questions on productivity and this in turn could also be just as lethal to the business or company.

So therefore there is never a conclusive way to manage or govern the stages of development in the business but we need to learn the balance out the needs and the requirements of every task at hand.

How should I Manage?

Well with all the stigma in this topic both can be equally bad and both can be fatal if followed in an extreme. Below are the traits and focus of managers this should allow you to mix and match based on your qualities as well, which will give you an all-round picture to bring out the best of your managing capabilities. Being a manager essentially means; managing yourself and also those around you in giving, guiding, growing together.

Always get feedback from peers whom you work with, understand, and build a platform for them to express. This will solve many problems for you and will help in developing a point of focus. Finding ways to be of good input to the employees matters a lot, and in return, they are going to take care of your business.

I have a theory, micromanagers in small companies or start-ups want employees to adhere to processes relevant to them, to separate high performers (who show resilience) from poor performers. I feel super sorry for founders who buy into this idea for several reasons, If you want to know more about then please respond to this comment and tag me and Jabez Ivan Joshiraj
