Michelle Obama demonstrates that Social Impact companies are the way of the future.

Michelle Obama demonstrates that Social Impact companies are the way of the future.

Last week, I attended the Wall Street Journal Future of Everything Festival in New York City after launching a new company, Boss Me In.

Through many content segments, the festival spoke about AI, the economy, freedom of the press, leadership, innovation, and much more (I will highlight critical things I learned in another?#linkedin?post.) However, attendees were waiting for the highlight of hearing Michelle Obama speak as the closing segment. We had no idea what she would be talking about, and quite frankly, it didn't matter. It was Michelle Obama.

To much surprise, Michelle began talking about the need to help young women, her work in the White House helping young people with her Let's Move campaign, and the desperate and urgent need to advocate and help kids eat healthier. So what did she announce? Mrs. Obama, on the spot, launched a new social impact corporation to help empower young people. She revealed that she co-founded the new company: PLEZi Nutrition.

At that moment, I was in shock. Sometimes when you are doing the impossible or, in my case, helping to create a company, you are so thick in the middle of the work and staying faithful to your calling and purpose that you don't realize the impact or the magnitude of the solution that you are solving or in the entrepreneurship journey will sometimes have doubts in your work. Michelle Obama had re-verified that Boss Me In was on the right path, timely and visionary. Michelle Obama proved that social impact companies are the way to go. Through the launch process, many people questioned me if Boss Me In was a non-profit, a B-corp, or an LLC; what is it? When I said a "social impact corporation," I got blank stares in response, almost a "Are you nuts?". But I listened to my gut, this is the way of the future, and yes, it is possible to do good, make a profit and help change the game (which women are and will do) in the corporate world. "I've learned that on this issue if you want to change the game, you can't just work from the outside. You've got to get inside," Mrs. Obama said.

The issue in our society is that we need to do more good, and corporations are responsible for leading the path in doing so. They must be held accountable as a dominant, powerful force to make a positive social impact. Social impact should be embedded throughout an organization, holistically from team to product to mission, not just be a single department.

In Boss Me In's case, through every layer and detail of the business, we have embedded "where everyone can win together," empowering not only ourselves, women, and young women. Boss Me In would have been an outstanding WSJ Future of Everything segment. I'll tell you why, while there were some women speakers, the segments in which the speakers were authentic about leadership and their story were the most raved about. Furthermore, we need to see diverse people coming together to speak in unison on topics. That is what Boss Me In offers. Authenticity, storytelling, and seeing diverse women come together are what young people want to hear more of and trust. And I'll be honest, the best questions from the audience segment after the segment was from young people asking the hard questions. And as Vivek Ramaswamy stated, "Young people are desperate to be led right now," honestly, America is not doing an excellent job of this.

"I believe there is a way to build a successful company and do right by our kids," Mrs. Obama. Thank you, Mrs. Obama; that is exactly what Boss Me In embodies and is doing. Boss Me In teaches through authentic customized live events, empowers through leadership and programming, and prepares young people for the Future of Work.
