Michael Jordan.
Perhaps you have heard of him,
he is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.
Tim Grover.
Someone you likely don't know or recognize.
Tim is one of the greatest and most profound basketball trainers of all time and also the author of the best selling personal development book, Relentless: From Good To Great To Unstoppable.
So why are these two names relevant to you and making more money in sales?
The Story
Whether you're a basketball player, a professional speaker, a plumber, a fisher, or salesman, this is for you.
Tim's story sheds light on a great point and shares the tale of why the best continue to get even better!
Tim strived to train the worlds most elite athletes, but with no previous superstar clients he was just "a trainer" not "THE TRAINER".
So in 1989, he began his search for top level clients. He sent out a letter offering his personal training services to fourteen of the fifteen players on the Chicago Bulls roster.
Not a single one got back to him...
The one person he did not send a letter too?
The goat, Michael Jordan.
So why not Mike?
At the time Michael Jordan was already considered the greatest basketball player in the world! Tim figured he didn't need or want any help, he was already the best.
But funny story,
Jordan was actually the only player who was not sent a letter but was also the only player who sought out Tim's training.
After getting beaten down by the Detroit Pistons the last few years prior, Jordan was ready to take his physical game to the next level.
So Jordan said hey what the hell and gave Tim one shot to prove that he could help him do that.
Long story short, he did.
What started as a 30 day contract turned into a 15 year partnership.
Tim was hired and went on to take Jordan's career to the next level, elevating him from All Star, to the greatest player to ever play the game.
The Lessons
There are three lessons to be learned.
The first lesson here is never make assumptions.
At times its easy to pass over a client because you think they are already really great at what they do and would never need help from you. However, you would be surprised who is willing to listen. The true greats are hungry to get better and are actually more open minded to new ideas because they understand consistent learning and improvement is key. Not to mention the last time I checked, asking never hurt anybody and the bottom line is you will never know unless you try. Uncover all opportunities!
The second lesson here is that there is always room for improvement.
A lot of people are good but few are great. The bridge between good to great comes down to habits, routines, and practices but the key is simply the right training. No matter what point of your career you are in, there is always room to grow. The best are the best because no matter what level of success they reach, they are always reaching higher. Regardless of what level of success you have had so far, keep reaching! If you aren't achieving the sales success you desire, evaluate your situation. Do you have the right personnel? Do you have a training program? Is your current program effective? If not, find the training and plug in.
The third and final lesson here, is that there is no instant success.
"Instant Success" does not exist, it is really when preparation meets opportunity. Although Tim had the chance to have Michael Jordan as his first client, Tim spent years of preparation so when his opportunity came, he was ready to deliver. If he wasn't, he would have never have gone on to train other greats like Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, or Charles Barkley. What are you doing to prepare? When you get your chance for that big client will you be prepared? Are you grinding harder than your peers? Do you take your craft seriously? Prepare to win and you will make more sales.
