Miami’s soccer revolution: How Innovation is solving the sport’s biggest challenges
Miami has redefined how the U.S. engages with soccer, using Inter Miami CF as more than just a team but as a strategic platform to address big challenges in the sport’s growth nationwide. Faced with the challenge of raising soccer’s profile in a country where other sports dominate, Miami leveraged its diversity, brought in global superstar Lionel Messi, and created a vibrant fan experience.
The arrival of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami CF has transformed both the team and the city into symbols of soccer’s rapid growth in the U.S. Together with David Beckham, a trailblazer since joining the Major League Soccer (MLS) with the LA Galaxy in 2007, Messi’s move isn’t just a big moment for the sport, it’s an opportunity for Miami to lead in sports innovation and global influence.?
One example of this transformation was the first-ever live, first-person broadcast of a soccer game on TikTok, where fans watched the game as if they were on the field. This groundbreaking approach merges technology and sports in a way the U.S. has previously used in American football and basketball. With the experience, Inter Miami and Messi bring a whole new dynamic to the American sports landscape, where technology now plays a central role.
A Global Challenge for a growing sport
Soccer’s popularity in the U.S. has always faced competition from established sports like football and basketball. As of 2022, only about 13% of Americans listed soccer as their favorite sport, showing that while the game has grown, it still has ground to cover. Yet, with the right strategy, the MLS is closing the gap, thanks in part to international stars like Beckham and Messi who are taking the sport to new levels of visibility and engagement.
For Miami, the goal is clear: create an experience that captures fans in a way no other city has done. By combining world-class talent with immersive technology, the city hopes to engage younger audiences who consume sports differently. This fresh approach has not only increased viewership in the stadium but also created a larger digital fanbase, proving that Miami is changing how America experiences soccer.

Soccer’s lagging popularity and digital experience in the U.S.
While soccer’s popularity has grown, its digital presence still lags behind sports like basketball and football, which offer immersive fan experiences. The NBA and NFL, for example, have 360-degree cameras, real-time player stats, and augmented reality features that make watching a game exciting from anywhere. Meanwhile, the MLS had yet to fully adopt these tools, missing an opportunity to connect with tech-savvy audiences who expect more from their sports experiences.

Think on how the King's league is creating direct interactivity with the fans or how Formula E is using tech to gamify the sport. While I don't think this level of interactivity is possible within that context, stadiums, with their big screens, could gamify the social aspect of the sport! For example, what if fans could vote during the game so the camera will follow a player in the field for 30 seconds even if they doesn't have the ball. Or if they could vote for a player they want to enter the field in the mid time. Or even make a battle cry were, depending on which side of the fans make more votes, a "GO [insert team name]" will sound in the loud speakers. Simple voting interfaces in your phones can amplify the experience in ways we are yet to explore. What do you think Alejandro Guzman, Rodrigo Ferro Ruiz, Lina M. Parra Ante
