MI and CBT combined
New research indicates that using Motivational Interviewing initially and then introducing CBT is highly effective ( Safran and Naar). It is exciting to use this approach to first help clients develop their internal motivation, promote change talk, and help them work through stages of change. Asking clients for permission at each stage of the therapy process, giving them positive reinforcement, using reflections, open ended questions, and summarizing their comments are very useful techniques as well. MI can also be used periodically to check in with clients and explore any ambivalence that may develop during CBT treatment.
