How Game Jams Can Help with Professional Placement
To work in various areas of the gaming market, such as storytelling, game design, development, animation, etc., many places require a portfolio to present to the recruiter. However, how can someone have a portfolio when they have no experience in the field? This is where game jams come in and play an important role.
Game jams are competitive events, either in-person or remote, where teams or individuals produce a game in a few days - usually, a game prototype is created and then further developed with more levels and mechanics, if desired. In most of them, there is a theme and diversifiers to be followed for validation by the judges and the community in general.
The winning teams can be rewarded in various ways, such as with cash prizes or by having the game published on a platform.
By joining itch.io, for example, you can find several game jams around the world. One of the major events of this kind is the Global Game Jam, which takes place annually in several countries, usually in-person.
However, it is also possible to participate remotely, regardless of location. In these cases, in addition to a portfolio, it is also interesting to practice a different language by interacting with other participants and submitting materials. Building up a portfolio is just one of the advantages of participating in a game jam.
These events are also great for networking, developing multidisciplinary skills, practicing a language, and superficially learning about the day-to-day operations of a game studio. Additionally, many companies require candidates to have at least one released game, and the work done in game jams counts as releases.
As mentioned earlier, some teams choose to develop the game beyond the MVP presented at the game jam. We have famous games that started at events like this, and many people don't even realize it. "Celeste," a platform game that won two awards at The Game Awards 2018 (Best Independent Game and Best Game with Social Impact), was born from a game jam; another game that also had its start in a jam and ended up gaining worldwide fame was "Goat Simulator," where the player lives as a goat.
Therefore, it is important to keep an eye on all events of this type, especially for those who do not yet have official experience in the gaming market. Many opportunities can arise from a game jam and be a major differentiator in a career in the gaming industry.
