Mexico Labels Depression, Stress as Occupational Diseases

The Mexican government updated its list of occupational diseases for the first time in 50 years, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS). This update aims to enhance the protection of workers across the country.

“After more than half a century without changes, the government of Mexico, led by President López Obrador, has updated the New List of Occupational Diseases to prioritize the health of workers,” writes STPS on X.

The update to the list includes 88 new diseases, incorporating psychosocial conditions such as severe stress and depression. The updated list also includes women's health issues like miscarriage and endometriosis. Additionally, the scope of cancers and poisoning-related diseases has been broadened.

An occupational disease is one contracted due to exposure to risk factors inherent to the job or the environment in which the worker is required to work, according to Colombia’s Government. In many countries, work-related health issues result in economic losses ranging from 4% to 6% of GDP, as reported by WHO.

In Latin America, occupational diseases are significantly underreported, with only five out of every 100 cases of work-related illnesses being officially recognized, as reported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Occupational health aims to ensure that workers return to their jobs in good health. The field focuses on improving and maintaining the overall physical, mental, and social well-being of workers across various professions, according to WHO. It examines how work and the work environment influence workers' wellbeing, as well as how their health affects their job performance.

“Occupational health is the medical specialty dedicated to preventing workplace diseases and risks,” says Hosanna Rodríguez, President, Latin American Association of Occupational Health (ALSO). “It is preventive in nature and focuses on the well-being of workers and their work environment,” says Rodríguez.
