Mexico has a new president

By: Dr. Rolando M. Ochoa D.B.A.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s new president, embodies a rich tapestry of experience and heritage. Born in Mexico 61 years ago, she hails from a lineage marked by resilience, as her grandparents survived the Holocaust in Bulgaria and Lithuania. Breaking barriers, she assumes the mantle as the first female president of Mexico and the first Jewish individual to hold this esteemed position in a predominantly Catholic nation.

?Her journey is etched with academic competence, holding a Ph.D. in Energy Engineering, a testament to her dedication to environmental science. Immersed in the crucible of learning, she traversed the corridors of the University of California, Berkeley, where her academic pursuits intertwined with activism during student protests.

Under the tutelage of the incumbent president, Lopez Obrador, her ascent in politics was catalyzed. Anointed as his environmental minister in 2000, while Lopez Obrador was Mexico City’s mayor, she charted a course toward public service. In subsequent years, her stewardship expanded, culminating in her mayoral tenure in Mexico City, marked by a mosaic of environmental and traffic-centric initiatives. As an interesting video of her tenure as mayor of Mexico City, in October 12, 2019, Sheinbaum, accompanied by Lopez Obrador naming the Cuban tyrant, Miguel Diaz-Canel “Distinguish Guest” of her city. ??

?Yet, amidst her affiliation with Lopez Obrador, Sheinbaum's ideological contours emerge distinct. Unlike his populist leanings, she navigates the spectrum of leftist politics with a more tempered approach, tied to pragmatism rather than ideology. As the branches of speculation grow, the looming question hangs: Will she uphold the mantle of her mentor's policies, particularly in the realms of crime, deficit budgets, and the environment?

?The dichotomy of her convictions surfaces in stark relief. Will Sheinbaum follow Lopez Obrador soft in crime approach which advocates for a “hugs not bullets” with the drug cartels? Sheinbaum's allegiance lies with green energy, since when the panel where she was a member earning Peace Prize accolades alongside Al Gore in the pursuit of sustainability, while López Obrador support the oil industry. What would she do? Her alignment with Lopez Obrador's social policies, despite historical budget deficits, underscores an unknown fidelity to her political lineage.

?As the jubilant chorus heralds her ascension, a sobering admonition resonates: Let us not be lured by the novelty of her gender. Instead, let scrutiny be tied to her competence, track record, and vision for Mexico's future. In this moment of uncertainty, the crucible of her presidency beckons a reckoning: Will she exercise her scholarly acumen and scientific training in service of Mexico's greater good, or will she be spellbound in the puppet strings of political expediency?

Hope she blazes her own path, and does not follow her mentors steps. But it sounds like it's going to be more of the same, based on her political upbring.
