Mexico Emerges as a Manufacturing Powerhouse

It's a new world as the global manufacturing landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation.

China's once-unassailable reign in the manufacturing realm has seen a gradual decline, as other nations like Vietnam, India, and Mexico have emerged as compelling alternatives.

Mexico in particular is now viewed as a formidable player due to its strategic proximity to the world's largest consumer market, endowing it with a unique advantage known as nearshoring. This shift, coupled with challenges confronting China, positions the United States to uphold its preeminence in global GDP for the foreseeable future.

With more than 40 percent of its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) being channeled into its manufacturing sector, Mexico strategically leverages its geographic closeness to the United States and other distinctive attributes to set itself apart from the global competition.

In 2021, FDI inflows into Mexico surged by an impressive 13 percent, reaching a total of $31.6 billion. The fact that it shares a nearly 2,000-mile border with the U.S. facilitates efficient transportation and minimizes logistical intricacies.

Its geographic proximity is complemented by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which produces a climate conducive to just-in-time production, swift responses to market fluctuations, and the fostering of collaboration between Mexican manufacturers and their American counterparts.

Mexico also boasts a substantial and highly skilled labor force, particularly excelling in industries such as automotive, electronics, and aerospace at substantially a lower cost than in the United States.

According to the Mexican Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the average hourly wage in manufacturing in Mexico was $3.90 USD in August 2023.

Finally, Mexico stands poised to attract high-tech manufacturing ventures that involve the safeguarding of intellectual property (IP). The USMCA furnishes strong protections for the IP of high-tech companies looking to outsource without compromising their proprietary assets.
