GO customers will have a chance to travel on a zero-emission battery electric GO Bus for the first time.

As Metrolinx continues to test electric vehicle technology, customers on GO Bus routes 19, 27, 92 and 96B may have the opportunity to ride on one of the two EV buses in this next phase of the trial project.

These routes were selected based on distances buses can travel and time needed for recharging. Testing has shown that these buses can travel about 225km in colder temperatures and about 300km in warmer temperatures without needing a charge. This data has contributed to determining which routes the buses would serve.

Customers will know they are boarding an extra green GO Bus by the unique appearance of the bus letting people know it’s one of two battery-electric GO Buses.

Mariana Phillips is a Toronto Football Club (TFC) fan who knows her family’s matchdays will be even better once the new Ontario Line subway links her densely populated Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood directly with BMO Field.

“I’m excited to see something different that can get me there faster,” said Phillips, who shares season tickets with her husband and 10-year-old son.

The new Ontario Line subway will be a gamechanger, stretching 15.6 km from Don Mills and Eglinton, under the Danforth and under the downtown core to the Exhibition GO Station – just steps from BMO Field.

An end-to-end trip will cut the 90-minute journey to less than half an hour.

“I love it because I can take one option, instead of having to take a bus, the subway and then a streetcar,” Phillips said. “It’s a straight shot.”

You don’t have to live near the Ontario Line to feel the benefits, and that’s because many existing routes will connect directly to it . Scarborough fans who now take the subway and a streetcar to reach the stadium will save 16 minutes by transferring to the Ontario Line at Pape.

At the least - a tiny step towards the ultimate “Move-As-U-Charge inductive charging infrastructural network. A repolished old shoe is still an old shoe. It reminds some people about the Greyhounds we use to have….

I hope that someday ML could test one of the many types of battery/electric hybrid train sets that other countries have tested in the GTHA on off-peak hours or one of the non Lakeshore routes. The Japanese/JR have some interesting ones though. The EV buses are a great start to rely less on traditional fuel types for a bus and looking forward to seeing them expand as technology and bus design improved. Exhibition station will get even busier once the the Ontario Line opens and the redesigned TTC LRT/streetcar stop once major events are in full swing. So I hope that there will be many path ways to and from the station for crowd control to pass through. Even when there are unscheduled delays. I'm looking forward when the new station building will get build and finished and hope that it will be close to what we have seen in the artist image of what it will look like and not another similar station design elsewhere on the GO rail network. Keep up the great work Metrolinx team.
