Earth Month: Delivering more transit while minimizing the carbon footprint
Earth Month creates an opportunity, each year in April, to raise environmental awareness and share new options to create more sustainable development.
Metrolinx works year-round to minimize its carbon footprint while delivering transit options that encourage people to use public transit.
For example, Metrolinx is helping transit agencies with the transition to battery electric buses.
The move to zero emission buses is about more than buying vehicles. Transit agencies will need to make plans for changes like retrofitting garages.
That’s why, on behalf of 13 agencies, Metrolinx has contracted with HDR, an engineering, architecture and consulting firm. Each agency will receive a customized report outlining a plan to prepare their fleet for conventional battery electric city buses.
Reminder: Queen Street diversion starts May 1 for Ontario Line work
Starting May 1, 2023, all vehicle traffic will be diverted off Queen Street from Bay Street to Yonge Street and from Yonge Street to Victoria Street for an estimated four and a half years – an important step forward in construction of Ontario Line’s future Queen Station.
Closing this section of street to vehicle traffic will expedite construction for the project by roughly one year compared to an approach with multiple partial closures. This means commuters can enjoy the benefits of the Ontario Line faster and with less disruption to the community.
