We’re all familiar with the idea of measuring data and all schools and academies are aware of the importance of data collection and analysis. But what are the metrics that matter?
This year has seen a move towards mastering and defining Learning Analytics. Making data-driven decisions in a way that benefits the student is starting to become the culture of educational establishments as opposed to a separate ‘project’ or initiative. Learning Analytics play a vital role in making predictions surrounding those who might be "at risk" by comparing their current activity to past performance or modelled data.
This can include:
· Reading content
· Assessments
· Social interactions
· Course access
· . . . anything else being measured in the school!
However, to truly understand your students you need to understand the metrics that matter. Instead of focusing on test results and completion numbers, the metrics that matter determine what a student has actually learned and how they’re applying this knowledge.
We’re surrounded by big data, from smart phones to GPS, wearable tech to social platform collaboration. I’m excited to find out what the data will tell us the in the future!
