Methanol for the Maritime Industry

Methanol for the Maritime Industry

Methanol offers a firm foundation for its use as an alternative marine fuel for the shipping world, thanks to the ability to store it onboard in liquid form at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Additionally, methanol handling and power conversion technologies are mature, and there is a strong level of infrastructure already existing in ports.

Methanol’s comparatively low pollutant emissions make it a good fuel choice for owners looking to meet environmental targets.

Considered amongst the most promising alternative marine fuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the maritime industry, which is also in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategy to reduce CO2 emission by 2050.?Methanol will be an important future marine fuel and adoption but there are still economical, availability, technical, infrastructure and safety challenges that need to be overcome in addition to greater knowledge of the characteristics of methanol-fuelled shipping operations that the maritime industry, both shipping companies & port operators must have before it can be adopted at scale as a maritime fuel.

?Complexities of the end-to-end supply chain of methanol bunkering, which includes the development of a cost-effective methanol supply chain, design of methanol bunkering vessels, as well as related supply chain infrastructure. Also, how can we grow methanol availability and cost effectiveness in production, how can port operators develop and operate methanol terminals and fuel bunkering network for cost efficient and safe distribution, storage, transfer and utilization of methanol as a carbon free fuel.

How can government agencies & industry stakeholders work towards the standardization of safe operation and regulations?

What is the available supply of methanol, sources of methanol and future costs of methanol including potential synergies with other alternative fuels to support the decarbonization of fleet and to become financially sustainable? What are feasible technologies and business models needed to adopt methanol as a marine fuel in a sustainable manner?
