Metering News - September 2024

Welcome to the September issue of Metering News.

Our first hydrogen networking event is a great success

Last week, we took a significant step forward in promoting the future of clean energy by hosting a two-day hydrogen event at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP), Birmingham. This also showcased our new line of hydrogen services “hydrogen solutions by ngm”.

The event brought together experts from across the energy sector to discuss, collaborate, and explore the latest advancements in hydrogen technology, all while experiencing hands-on demonstrations in a unique setting.

A key highlight of the event was our “world’s first” hydrogen-powered kitchen, the first fully operational commercial kitchen powered entirely by clean hydrogen technology. The event was catered by Falcon Foodservice Equipment, showcasing the practical use of hydrogen in a commercial kitchen environment, where innovation met sustainability.

The first day was rich with expert insights. Esteemed speakers included Clare Jackson from Hydrogen UK, Victoria Mustard from National Grid – ESO soon to be the National System Energy Operator (NESO), and David Hardman from National Gas Transmission who shared their perspectives on the future role of hydrogen in the evolving energy landscape. The sessions were followed by a networking lunch, allowing attendees to discuss and collaborate.

Afterward, participants were treated to guided tours of our hydrogen kitchen and other cutting-edge hydrogen facilities at TEP, where they witnessed Birmingham’s role in driving clean energy innovation.

On the second day, the focus shifted to the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study, a collaborative discussion between our team and DNV. The conversations centred around the role of hydrogen alongside electrification, future funding opportunities, and the potential of a comprehensive hydrogen network in the UK. These sessions provided valuable insights into hydrogen’s long-term impact on the energy transition and highlighted the critical collaborations necessary to accelerate hydrogen adoption.

The event, expertly led by our Innovation Lead Chris Wood and Hydrogen Development Engineer Phil Burbidge, was a resounding success, fostering important discussions and forging new partnerships in the hydrogen sector. As we continue to lead in the development of hydrogen solutions, we remain committed to advancing the clean energy transition through innovation and collaboration.

Uniting Customer Growth, Innovation, and Engineering teams to enhance service and drive innovation

At National Gas Metering, our commitment to delivering exceptional service and innovative solutions is at the heart of everything we do. Recently, our Customer Growth and Innovation Team came together with our Engineering Team for a dynamic knowledge-sharing session designed to elevate our service offerings and further reinforce our customer-first philosophy.

Collaboration for Excellence

The collaboration between these two teams was focused on identifying the most efficient and effective ways to improve service levels and customer satisfaction. Through open discussions and brainstorming sessions, we exchanged best practices, explored innovative approaches, and worked together to develop strategies that prioritise the needs of our customers.

From the technical insights of our engineers to the customer-focused perspectives of our growth and innovation specialists, this collaborative effort helped us to refine our approach to delivering reliable and future-focused metering and infrastructure solutions. At National Gas Metering, we believe that true innovation stems from the synergy of diverse expertise, and this session was a testament to that philosophy.

We are always thinking of our customers, ensuring that every step we take is aligned with their evolving needs. By fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation across all levels of our business, we remain committed to delivering not just solutions, but meaningful, customer-centric advancements.

We look forward to sharing more updates on how our teams continue to work together to drive progress and keep the customer at the heart of everything we do.

Marshalling at the Balsall Common Fun Run

A huge thank you to Kemi Agunbiade for representing National Gas Metering and dedicating her Sunday morning to marshalling at the Balsall Common Fun Run! This fantastic annual event is organised by one of our charity partners, The Lily Mae Foundation, which provides vital support to parents and families following a Stillbirth, Neonatal Death, Miscarriage, or Medical Termination. Kemi’s involvement is a wonderful example of how our team is committed to giving back and supporting causes that make a real difference. Well done, Kemi, for helping the event run smoothly and being part of something so meaningful!

Homegrown crops feed the local community

We’re thrilled to share that produce from our very own NGM allotment has been transformed into delicious, fresh salads by The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) at one of their recent community events. TAWS, a community benefit society and cooperative, works to foster healthy, connected, and active communities. They were delighted with the produce we provided and often utilise our hydrogen kitchen facility at Tyseley Energy Park for their gatherings. It’s incredible to see how our sustainable efforts are contributing to local well-being—feeding both the body and the community spirit!

Asset Team’s productive day at our allotment

Our Asset Integrity Team had a busy and rewarding day last week, working under the sunshine to make improvements at the NGM allotment. With teamwork and dedication, they installed a water irrigation system for the planters, cleared away long grass and weeds, and planted additional crops. A big shout out to the team for their hard work and commitment.

Tyseley Energy Park community clean-up day

A heartfelt thanks to our volunteers who participated in the Community Clean-Up Day along the River Cole and the Grand Union Canal! These volunteering efforts not only contribute to the environment but also boost our physical and mental well-being. The team also discovered the "Love Clean Streets" app, a fantastic tool that allows users to report environmental issues like fly-tipping or potholes directly to local authorities in just four easy steps. It’s a great way to stay engaged with community efforts! Check out the app here.

That concludes our round-up of news for September!
