Metergram Insights: Revealing the Hidden Potentials of Bidirectional Charging
In an Electric Avenue newsletter from May, bidirectional charging in modern EVs is being framed as an innovative frontier for energy use beyond mobility. Yet, most EVs today do not officially support this technology.
This belief has been challenged by recent PIONIX tests conducted under the EVerest project. These tests reveal that some current production vehicles, despite their official stances, allow for covert DC V2G discharging. Notably, the Polestar 2 and vehicles on Hyundai-KIA's E-GMP platform allow unlimited discharging. However, brands like Tesla, BMW, and VW Group impose discharging restrictions.
This discovery underscores the complex landscape and the hidden capacities within the EV industry, raising questions on whether this is a deliberate design or a loophole. Nonetheless, it provides a glimpse into a promising future shaped by electric mobility and data-driven insights.
As such, we call on all stakeholders in the EV industry, including CPOs and eMSPs, to foster synergy and innovate collaboratively. By embracing the benefits of bidirectional charging technology, we can drive the green mobility revolution forward, making energy use more efficient and sustainable.
