Metaverse

The metaverse is the next evolution in social connection and the successor to the mobile internet.

Meta defines the metaverse as “the next evolution in social connection and the successor to the mobile internet.”

Like the internet, the metaverse will help you connect with people when you aren’t physically in the same place and get us even closer to that feeling of being together in person.

While this definition is generally true, it’s important to know that Meta doesn’t control the metaverse; no company does.

In fact, rather than thinking of one virtual space called the metaverse, it’s more appropriate to use the plural form, metaverses, at the current stage.

A metaverse can be any 3D virtual space powered by technologies – including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain – that allows people to interact with each other (and in some cases, with non-human avatars).

There are many metaverses existing today.

Most of them were created by individual companies and serve a particular purpose. There is little to no interoperability among metaverses, as the standards of sharing user identities and data across different metaverse spaces haven’t been developed yet

METAVERSE MEANING

The metaverse refers to an immersive and persistent three-dimensional virtual realm, shared with many users, that spans various digital platforms and merges with the physical world, where people can shop, work, play and hang out together in real time.

How Does the Metaverse Work?

In theory, the metaverse works by allowing an infinite number of people to synchronously connect together in real time in an always-on virtual environment that’s immersive, three-dimensional and connects to our physical world in seamless ways.

In reality, it’s a tricky technological feat to accomplish. Such a thing requires enormous amounts of computer processing and advancements made in smartphone, gaming device and VR and AR headset technology.

Plus, a single, interoperable metaverse — one that would let users carry their identities and digital collectibles across platforms owned by different companies — would require serious coordination and cooperation between various organizations.

Historically, companies (gaming companies especially) have been hesitant to allow their assets to be compatible with a competitor’s ecosystem. Playing nicely with other platforms, the logic goes, would mean giving up some amount of control. But for a fully realized metaverse to come about, such cooperation will be necessary.

How do you access the metaverse?

The metaverse will include familiar 2D experiences, as well as ones projected into the physical world and fully immersive 3D ones too.

You’ll be able to access the metaverse on different devices like your phone or computer, as well as virtual reality devices where you’re fully immersed.

Who is the metaverse for?

The metaverse isn’t just for gamers or developers, it will be for everyone. And our hope is that in the next decade it will reach a billion people.

How Is The Metaverse Different From The Internet?

Even though the metaverse is often considered the next evolution of the internet, there are significant differences between the two.

The internet, as we know it, is a network of websites.

Initially, websites were created for information distribution only.

Today, websites serve various purposes, from shopping, entertainment, to communication. The emergence of social networks made the internet a channel for people to connect and share their lives with each other.
