The Metaverse Buzz

What is this thing 'The Metaverse' and why has it become such a popular internet buzzword?

Well, imagine an online experience that blends the physical and digital worlds. That's part of the metaverse experience of the future - you can think of it as an upgrade to our current generation of web and digital experiences with more features than your typical website, app or current state AR/VR can offer.

The Metaverse is still a new concept but there have been many predictions about how it will change in future years; for now though, we don't know exactly what it will include or look like just yet. We are still seeing it in its infancy with all the growing pains and potential yet to come.

The Beginning

The 1990s was when cyberspace began to be used to describe virtual locations in which people interacted with each other. These were the forerunners for what may become future areas of the ultimate metaverse, such as Second Life (considered by many a pioneer and visionary and still quite an active community site).

But the idea of virtual worlds and the blending of "in real life" and otherworldly experiences has been around much longer than that. Some have stated that the essence of virtual reality began in paintings like those on the cave walls in Lascaux. Imagery in medieval churches were spoken about as "windows into other worlds."

The metaverse is still developing, meaning that it mostly exists in prototypes and virtual reality gaming as opposed to real world usage. However, with current advancements in augmented reality and virtual reality, it's only a matter of time before we start seeing more mature developments. With technology always morphing into the unknown, there is no doubt that the metaverse will be evolving right alongside it.
