Meta’s VR Expansion: A Digital Playground or a Risk for Teens?
Meta is opening its virtual doors to younger creators. The company recently announced that thirteen-year-olds now have early access to the Meta Horizon Worlds desktop editor. (Note: Some regions require children to be fourtenn years old to access the editor).The platform offers tools such as TypeScript support, generative AI for US-based users, and monetization opportunities.
For parents, this raises an urgent question. Is this a creative opportunity or a digital risk?
What Is Meta Offering?
Meta’s Horizon Worlds is a social virtual reality platform where users build immersive environments, interact with others, and now generate AI-assisted content. With this latest update, teenagers can create and monetize their virtual experiences using advanced coding tools and AI-driven features.
This move is being framed as an expansion of creative expression, but from a child safety perspective, the risks are hard to ignore!
The Risks for Young Users
Exposure to Unmoderated Content
Virtual spaces are difficult to police. AI-assisted content creation introduces even greater challenges. Teenagers may encounter inappropriate material, misleading AI-generated content, or pressure to produce engagement-driven material they do not fully understand.
For example, generative AI tools within Meta Horizon Worlds allow users to create objects, landscapes, and even interactive avatars that can respond dynamically to conversations. A well-meaning teen might experiment with AI-generated dialogue for a virtual character, only to find that the AI adapts in unexpected ways, generating inappropriate or misleading responses. If another young user interacts with this AI-driven character, they could be exposed to content that neither the creator nor the platform anticipated.
Additionally, some virtual worlds rely on user-generated economies, where teen creators might be pressured to design content that is more shocking or sensational in order to attract visitors. If inappropriate content is being shared or resold, it may circulate before moderators can act, leaving young users exposed to harmful material.
Monetization and Exploitation Risks
Encouraging thirteen-year-old children to monetize digital creations blurs the line between hobby and labor. Will they face pressure to create content for financial gain? Could they be manipulated into prioritizing engagement and revenue over their own well-being?
A teenager who starts creating virtual experiences may do so for fun, but once they see other users earning money from their digital spaces, pressure to monetize can quickly build. A creator who initially designed a small, interactive game for friends may feel the need to add features that make their world more “marketable” to increase their chances of earning rewards.
The risk is that young users could be influenced by algorithm-driven engagement strategies that favor highly addictive, attention-grabbing content. If their success depends on keeping people in their world for as long as possible, they may feel pressure to design manipulative elements (such as loot boxes, endless gameplay loops, or misleading promotions) without fully understanding the ethical concerns behind them.
Additionally, monetization introduces financial risks. Teens may invest real money into their digital worlds, by buying in-game assets or advertising their content, without considering the consequences of financial loss. Worse, older users may exploit younger creators, persuading them to hand over creative assets or work for little or no reward under the guise of “collaborating” or offering exposure.
Privacy and Data Collection Concerns
Meta has been criticized for its handling of user data, particularly when it comes to minors. What data is being collected from these young creators? How is it being used? If AI tools are learning from teenage users, families deserve full transparency on what happens to that data.
For instance, a teenager building a custom AI-powered assistant in Horizon Worlds might not realize that Meta is collecting and storing every interaction the AI has with other users. This could include voice recordings, chat logs, and behavioral data, all of which could be used to refine Meta’s AI models.
Similarly, Meta may be tracking how young creators build and interact with their virtual spaces, using that data to profile their interests, habits, and spending behavior. If this information is later used to serve highly personalized ads or sold to third parties, parents and teens may have little control over how their data is used.
Furthermore, young creators might unknowingly give away personal information in the content they design. A simple virtual classroom project might accidentally include real-world locations, names, or other identifying details that could be exploited by bad actors.
Predation and Online Grooming
Social virtual reality spaces have long struggled with harassment and grooming risks. Giving thirteen-year-olds access to an ecosystem that includes older users and financial incentives increases the risk of manipulation and exploitation.
A young creator might meet an older user who offers to “mentor” them in creating better content. This guidance could start off as helpful but gradually become manipulative, with the older user encouraging the teen to share personal information, engage in private conversations, or even move their interactions to unmoderated platforms like Discord or private messaging apps.
Because monetization is now a factor, the risks extend further. A teen might be offered money or in-game perks in exchange for private interactions, unknowingly stepping into an exploitative situation. Worse, since virtual reality can create a false sense of trust and presence, young users may not recognize predatory behavior until they are deeply entangled in it.
There have already been cases of inappropriate interactions in virtual spaces, and without strict enforcement of identity verification, parental oversight, and proactive moderation, the risks of grooming and exploitation in Horizon Worlds remain a serious concern.
Psychological and Cognitive Impact
Extended virtual reality use has been linked to issues such as eye strain, motion sickness, and reduced attention spans. Beyond the physical effects, there is also the psychological pressure of digital competition. When teenagers see virtual success as tied to monetization and popularity, it may introduce unhealthy online behaviors.
For instance, a teenager who starts building virtual worlds may initially do so out of curiosity, but once they see leaderboards, social rankings, or earnings reports, they may begin obsessing over how to make their world more popular. This could lead to excessive time spent online, neglecting schoolwork, friendships, and real-world activities.
Teenagers who become immersed in virtual reality friendships and social validation may also experience heightened anxiety when they are offline, fearing they are missing out or that their content will become irrelevant. Some young creators may even experience burnout, feeling they must constantly update and improve their digital worlds to keep up with trends.
This is particularly concerning given that many digital platforms use psychological techniques to keep users engaged, such as dopamine-driven reward systems that mimic those found in gambling. A teenager who becomes deeply invested in their virtual success may struggle with self-regulation and emotional well-being, experiencing stress, frustration, or even depression when their content does not perform as expected.
