We have been hearing that Meta may move to a subscription model in Europe to avoid the EU entanglements around advertising and privacy. This would be a significant change, as it would be the first time that a major social media platform has charged users for access.
The article raises some interesting questions about the value of social media. Is it worth paying for? If Meta does start charging European users, will they continue to use the service?
I think this is a litmus test for social media. If users are willing to pay for it, then it shows that they find it to be valuable. But if they're not willing to pay, then it shows that social media is not as essential as we think it is.
So what is the value proposition for a paid subscription?

But there are also downsides:
Right now, I'm not sure if I think it's good or bad. On the one hand, I like the idea of having more control over my privacy and being free from targeted advertising. On the other hand, $14 a month for Instagram? Hell no!
This is a complex issue with both potential benefits and risks. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in Europe and whether it spreads to other parts of the world. We are in truly unchartered territories...
But what about you? Would you pay to keep your Insta/FB page?
