Meta's New Data Rules: Is Your Health/Wellness Ad Account at Risk?

Dear reader (tried the Bridgerton style. Hope you like it :P),?

Meta has tightened its data policies through the Core Setup, and the health and wellness industry is feeling the pinch. But what’s actually happening and how do you dodge this?

Let’s know it all in a quick way in this email.?

So, first, why is Meta doing this?

Meta doesn't want to have information about its users that violate privacy. Even without explicitly sharing PII or PHI, Meta can infer sensitive health information in numerous ways including URLs, event-specific data, API parameters, and behavioral patterns. Meta's advanced algorithms understand what you’re doing, and will block your data from being used.

To get this done, Meta brought in the Core Setup earlier. And that’s what is impacting the health and wellness industry today. Tomorrow it might be yours too [I heard some cosmetic/skin care brands also facing such restrictions]

But what can you do to overcome these restrictions on your Meta Ads account?

Follow these best practices to comply with HIPAA and protect sensitive information, as the bare minimum to not be restricted:

  • Scrub URLs and Query Parameters: Remove sensitive terms (e.g., /schedule?type=cardiology becomes /schedule?event=123).

  • Sanitize Data Before Sharing: Use server-side tagging to filter and anonymize data before sending it to Meta. Remove Pixel from your website.
  • Neutralize Event and Parameter Names: Replace health-specific event names (e.g., “schedule_fertility_consultation”) with generic labels (e.g., “event_01”).
  • Avoid Sharing Direct PII: No emails, phone numbers, or IP addresses to Meta directly. Please use SHA256 hash for the PII.
  • Get Clear Consent (explicit consent for data sharing): Always ensure a checkbox, and store that consent with real-time updation of this consent.

Tools such as CustomerLabs 1PD Ops can provide a solution for those requirements.
