EU Commission States Meta's Ad-Free Subscription Service Breaches DMA Regulations
Meta's ad-free subscription plan, designed to comply with EU laws by allowing users to opt out of ads and data tracking for €9.99 per month, has been ruled non-compliant with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by the EU Commission.
The DMA mandates that users be able to access social media services without data tracking and without having to pay. Privacy advocates argue Meta's plan undermines GDPR protections, prompting an investigation by the European Data Protection Board.

Threads Hit 175 Million Users on its First Anniversary
Initially designed as an alternative for users dissatisfied with Elon Musk's changes to Twitter (now X), Threads has built its own active user base, largely from Instagram. The app saw rapid early growth, with 100 million profiles created within its first few days. In April 2024, the app achieved 150 million active users, and now that number has grown to 175 million.??
However, despite its success, Threads' growth has slowed, currently adding 5 million new active users per month. Comparatively, X remains at 250 million daily active users.

X is Contemplating Introducing Downvotes for Post Replies
With Elon Musk continuing to make changes and adjustments to X, he is currently exploring the possibility of introducing downvotes for post replies to improve comment ranking and highlight relevant engagement.
The idea is to reduce spam and misleading information without introducing political bias. The downvote system would be weighted based on users' political perspectives to prevent brigading by any one ideology.
The overall goal is only to downrank low-quality content while maintaining diverse opinions.
