Meta's $10 Billion Gamble: Why They Launched LLaMa 3 and Open-Sourced it!!!

Here at Linkedin , I regularly write about latest topics on Artificial Intelligence, democratizing AI knowledge that is relevant to you.

In this edition, we will talk about Meta's open-source strategy. Are they actually trying to help the open-source community, or are they trying to do what Andriod did to IOS. Read further to find out....

But, lets quickly understand the meaning of Open-source and Closed-source AI models.

The difference between open source and proprietary AI models lies in their development, accessibility, and usage. Open-source AI models are made available to the public, allowing anyone to use, modify, and distribute the source code. This approach encourages community collaboration, transparency, and innovation, as developers can build upon and alter the AI algorithms and pre-trained models to create their own products and tools.

On the other hand, proprietary AI models are owned and controlled by private companies, and their source code is not publicly available. These models are typically developed and maintained by large tech companies, which invest heavily in research, data, and computational power to create advanced AI capabilities.

In the context of Meta's decision to open source its LLaMA 3 models, the company is taking a unique approach by making its models freely available, hoping to control the platform on which others are building and eventually find a way to monetize that position. This move is seen as strategic, as it can accelerate the development of AI and position Meta as a leader in the industry.

Actually, by keeping LLaMa 3 open-source, Meta is trying to do to OpenAI, Google etc. what Android did to IOS, a few years ago.

Android's decision to remain open source played a pivotal role in its substantial market share lead over iOS. By allowing for extensive customization and rapid development at zero license fee, Android appealed to a broader audience. This openness fostered innovation and flexibility, empowering manufacturers to cater to diverse consumer preferences and rapidly adapt to evolving market demands.

In contrast, iOS, with its closed ecosystem, offered limited customization and device variety, constraining its ability to compete effectively with the expansive Android ecosystem. As a result, Android's open-source approach enabled it to gain a significant advantage in the mobile market, ultimately leading to its widespread adoption and dominance over iOS in terms of market share.

Similarly, Meta has also committed to making its models freely available as open-source products in hopes that it will control the platform on which others are building and eventually find a way to monetize that position.

Remember, Meta has billions of users who are regularly using Meta’s platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. By launching Meta AI, a virtual assistant that runs on LLaMa 3 models, and integrating it into the existing apps, Meta is driving mega adoption of its AI model and solutions, in the order of billions of new users.

LLaMa 3

Here are 3 ways in which Meta would plan to monetize its open-source LLaMa 3 AI models through three key strategies:

1.????? Selling access to AI models: Meta intends to offer larger AI models and increased compute power for a fee, departing from its current open-source model where access is free for users and companies below a certain size threshold. This shift aims to unlock significant value for both individuals and businesses over time.

2.????? Introducing ads in AI interactions: Meta envisions incorporating advertisements or paid content into AI interactions, leveraging its expertise in digital advertising. This strategy aligns with Meta's core business model of selling advertising space, and it could potentially increase engagement and ad exposure across its social and messaging platforms.

3.????? Business messaging: Meta plans to capitalize on AI by offering generative-AI tools for business messaging. These tools could support automated interactions with users and customers, evolving beyond simple chatbots to become AI "agents" capable of handling complex tasks and processing multiple queries. Revenue from AI business messaging is seen as a nearer-term opportunity for Meta, with the goal of integrating Meta AI into the daily activities of hundreds of millions or even billions of users within the next few years. ???

To conclude, Meta's strategy behind making Llama 3 open source is to accelerate the development of AI, position itself as a leader in the industry, and eventually monetize its position. The open-source approach is seen as a key advantage, allowing for faster innovation, better products, and a healthier overall market. Meta is playing a very expensive game and whether it will succeed or not, only time will tell….
