"As always he was at his usual spot this morning when I passed him on my walk. Months ago when he first took up residence on this particular bench I started thinking of him as “Metal Man.” A street person, he wears worn out camouflage pants and shirt. They look like they haven’t been washed in a long time. If it were just his outfit you wouldn’t think twice about him — just another street person with a battered paper cup at their feet asking... for change. But what makes him stand out is the metal — almost all of his clothes are festooned with metal — many different sizes of chain, carabineers, a crescent wrench, a bicycle pedal… every conceivable kind of metal is attached somewhere on his clothes. Once in a while I see him walking on the street and he jingles like a fat pocketful of coins. Sometimes we make eye contact and because I pass him almost every day sitting in the same place, we nod to each other. Today after I passed I thought — Wait a minute. What if he isn’t Metal Man the eccentric street guy with a thing for hanging metal stuff on his clothes and seems to be permanently stationed on that bench. What if he’s from somewhere else, sent here by unknown powers to guard Vienna, or the earth from… something very bad. What if, without our knowledge, he is here to protect us and will need all of that supposedly mundane clanking metal that covers him from head to toe when the final battle comes. What if…
I know the idea is not a new one and versions of it have been done in films like MEN IN BLACK and numerous science fiction or fantasy stories. But the next time you see your neighborhood eccentric or street person think for a moment that particular “What if-“. For at least a short while it will turn up the volume in your imagination a few notches."
