Metacognition and the Power of Meta Skills

Metacognition and the Power of Meta Skills

"You need to know how your brain operates in order to rewire it"

I can't remember when and where I saw this phrase but I was struck by its relevance just lately. At Hyper Island we completed our first round of Meta Sessions with a Future Ethics workshop and ran our second Meta Session workshop in Portuguese. On a personal level I also participated in a meeting at one of my kids schools where I was, not for the first time, reminded of how metacognition is part of many young people's everyday discourse. Trying to understand just how my own son's brain functions in different ways to my own and the implications for how we all as individuals learn is a core element to why we have spent time this year exploring the Meta Skills.

Metacognition in simple terms, is thinking about thinking. It's the ability to be aware of your own cognitive processes, understand how you learn and solve problems, and most importantly, control and enhance those processes. It's about being the captain of your cognitive ship.

Meta-Skills on the other hand, are perhaps the learning to learn skills. Increasingly they are the becoming superpowers for professionals in a highly complex business environment. Think of them as higher-order, transferable skills that enable you to excel in various domains and contexts. Examples include foresight, creativity, rapport and adaptability. They're the skills that make you not just proficient but outstanding in your field.

The Connection: Metacognition and Meta-Skills

So, how about a quick dive into how metacognition is often one of the foundations upon which your meta-skills are built:

  1. Self-Awareness Leads the Way: Metacognition is your compass in the vast sea of skills. To effectively develop and apply meta-skills, you first need to be aware of your cognitive processes, strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences. It's your internal GPS that guides you towards your destination.
  2. The Art of Self-Regulation: Self-regulation, a quintessential meta-skill, is all about setting goals, planning, monitoring progress, and making necessary adjustments. Metacognition is your trusted advisor in this journey. It helps you assess your progress, identify obstacles, and make informed decisions about how to reach your goals efficiently.
  3. Boosting Critical Thinking: Critical thinking, a prized meta-skill, involves evaluating information, reasoning logically, and making informed decisions. Metacognition acts as your mirror, allowing you to reflect on your thinking processes, uncover biases, challenge assumptions, and refine your critical thinking abilities.
  4. Enhancing Problem-Solving: Problem-solving, another meta-skill gem, requires identifying, analyzing, and solving complex issues. Metacognition empowers you to assess your problem-solving strategies and adapt them based on past experiences. It's your secret sauce for continuous improvement.
  5. Mastering Adaptability: Adaptability, the hallmark of a true professional, involves adjusting to new situations and learning from experiences. Metacognition is your mentor in this journey, helping you reflect on both successes and failures, extract valuable lessons, and apply them to future challenges.

Your Metacognition Roadmap

Metacognition and meta-skills are not just buzzwords; they're the pillars of professional success. By embracing metacognition, you can take charge of your cognitive abilities and turbocharge your journey toward mastering meta-skills. It's a journey of self-discovery, self-improvement, and ultimately, self-mastery.

Our Meta Skills sessions will continue in both English and Portuguese. For more information... https://hyperislandamericas.com and https://www.hyperisland.com.br
