Meta Uses UK Users to Train AI and Australia Amps Up Laws Against Misinformation

1/5 Meta Wins Approval to Use UK Users Posts to Train AI?

Meta has officially gained approval to use users' posts to train its AI, after putting development of these systems on hold back in July. After lengthy negotiations with British authorities, Meta will now be able to use users’ public posts on Facebook and Instagram to train generative AI models. Meta hopes that by using public posts, its AI will have a good understanding of British history, culture, and idiom. As such, UK companies will be able to use the new technology for themselves. However, many believe that Meta is simply using this phrasing to lessen the anticipated push back it will inevitably receive from the public when they become aware of its new plans. EU authorities are still holding off on giving Meta the all clear to use European user data.?

2/5 TikTok creates new ‘delete and re-edit’ feature for posted videos?

TikTok is trialling a new feature that would allow users to completely start over with their in-app videos. The option gives users the chance to remove all of the edits made on their raw clips, returning to a blank slate. The new feature only counts for edits made in TikTok, meaning it will solely benefit users who do all their editing within the app; especially those who film and edit in TikTok, rather than filming externally. As such, it could be a ploy from TikTok to encourage users to do their manipulations in the platform, rather than on third-party sites such as CapCut.?

3/5 Australia Proposes New Anti-Misinformation Laws for Social Media?

Australia is currently considering following in Europe’s footsteps by creating new fines for social media platforms that willingly enable misinformation. If the bill is passed by parliament, the Australian Communications and and Media Authority would be given powers to both investigate and prosecute social media platforms for disinformation and misinformation by users. Platforms could be fined up to 5% of their global revenue if they do not adhere to new reporting practices and requirements for the removal of found misinformation on their apps. The bill is very similar to the Digital Services Act in place in Europe.?

4/5 Google Rolls Out “Confidential Matching”?

In its bid to investigate solutions to limit personal data collection, Google is implementing a new process called “confidential matching” for Google ads. The process will establish a new way to combine a businesses’ first-party information with Google’s insights to reach the right audiences. Through the use of Trusted Execution Environments, confidential matching combines data outputs and uses this to aid in ad targeting. The process protects both data sets through encryption, solving Google’s ongoing issue of privacy around personal data sharing. Google has, notoriously, struggled to find a business-friendly solution to the issue, as seen through its failed cookie tracking phase out in 2022.?
